CASE 5:54 Year Old Male Passed Out Kidney Stone of Size 6.7 X 3.1mm
A healthy athletic maleapproached us having diagnosed with kidney stone (Calcium oxalate stone). His blood test showed very high level of vitamin D 150.1ng/mLdue to the overdosing of the Vitamin D supplement. Total cholesterol was marginally high by 266mg/dL, triglycerides by 198 mg/dL, urine test showed blood.
Parathyroid hormone was normal, procalcitonin levels were normal as well. SGPT slightly raised.
Patient’s history revealed he was fond of eating red meat and was consuming it 3-4 times in a week.
Patient was put on Potassium Citrate, Magnesium Citrate, Vitamin B6, vitamin A & was advised a specific diet plan that would prevent further accumulation of calcium oxalate crystals. Patient was asked to eat diet low in saturated fat, and rich in omega 3 fatty acids, foods high in oxalate like peanuts, spinach, beets, sesame seeds, chocolate, tofu, soy products and sweet potatoes were stopped.
Vitamin D was immediately stopped; Vitamin K2 was added to encourage redistribution of Calcium. Patient was also given oral oxalo -it is a combination of probiotics, that promotes breaking down or degrading calcium oxalate in the intestinal tract before it can move into the kidneys.
Patient was advised to increase hydration and was advised intravenous chelation with EDTA every week for total 8 weeks. After undergoing a few chelations USG was repeated, the results which showed reduced size of the stone.
And after the 7th chelation, patient passed out the stone smoothly through urine without any pain. After completing the chelations USG results revealed no stone in the urinary tract.
